BrailleDocs

Last updated: April 2026

1. Who We Are

BrailleDocs (brailledocs.com) is operated by NewHaptics. BrailleDocs is a web-based braille translation tool designed for teachers of the visually impaired, braille transcribers, and braille professionals.

Our service is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure located in the United States.

2. What We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your email address, display name, and a hashed version of your password. If you sign in through an OAuth provider (such as Google), we collect the provider-issued user identifier. We also collect your country and region via GeoIP lookup at the time of account creation.

Document Content

We process and store the files you upload, the braille translations we generate, and any corrections you make to translated output. This content is stored in association with your account so that you can retrieve it later.

Usage Data

We collect analytics events (such as page views, feature usage, and translation requests), session identifiers, and IP addresses. This data helps us understand how the service is used and identify areas for improvement.

Feedback

When you submit feedback through the application, we collect your name (if provided), your comments, your IP address, and the application version in use at the time of submission.

3. How We Use It

We use the information we collect to:

  • Authenticate your identity and manage your account
  • Save, retrieve, and manage your documents and translations
  • Improve translation quality by analyzing user corrections
  • Analyze aggregate usage patterns to improve the service
  • Respond to feedback and support requests

Legal bases for processing (GDPR):

  • Consent: Analytics cookies and optional data collection
  • Contract: Account creation and document services (necessary to provide the service you requested)
  • Legitimate interest: Security monitoring, service improvements, and fraud prevention

4. Cookies & Local Storage

BrailleDocs uses a minimal set of cookies and local storage items to operate the service:

  • 2 authentication cookies (httpOnly JWT tokens) for secure session management
  • 2 OAuth flow cookies (session-scoped) used temporarily during third-party sign-in
  • Several localStorage items for user preferences such as theme, font size, and editor settings

For a complete breakdown of every cookie and local storage item, including their purposes, durations, and classifications, see our Cookie Policy.

5. How We Share Data

We do not sell your personal data.

We do not share your personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. Specifically:

  • OAuth providers (e.g., Google) are used solely for authentication. We receive only the minimum information needed to verify your identity; we do not send your data back to these providers.
  • Analytics is self-hosted using Umami on our own infrastructure. No analytics data is transferred to external services.
  • No third-party trackers, ad networks, or data brokers are present on this service.

We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or governmental regulation, or if necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of NewHaptics, our users, or the public.

6. Where Data Is Stored

All data is stored on AWS Lightsail servers located in the United States.

Note for users in the European Union: By using BrailleDocs, your data is transferred to and processed in the United States. The United States may not provide the same level of data protection as your home country. By continuing to use the service, you consent to this transfer.
